What is a Stroke?
A stroke occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. Stroke is a medical emergency, and prompt treatment is crucial.
Recognizing the Warning Signs
The most common method to identify stroke symptoms is the FAST approach:
- F — Face drooping: One side of the face droops or is numb. Ask the person to smile — is the smile uneven?
- A — Arm weakness: One arm is weak or numb. Ask the person to raise both arms — does one arm drift downward?
- S — Speech difficulty: Speech is slurred or hard to understand. Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence.
- T — Time to call emergency services: If any of these signs are present, call for medical help immediately.
Additional Symptoms to Watch For
Beyond FAST, other stroke symptoms may include:
- Sudden severe headache with no known cause
- Sudden confusion or trouble understanding speech
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
- Sudden difficulty walking, dizziness, or loss of balance
- Sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body
Why Time Matters
In stroke treatment, every minute counts. The phrase “time is brain” reflects the reality that approximately 1.9 million neurons are lost every minute during a stroke. Early intervention, including thrombolysis (clot-dissolving medication), can significantly improve outcomes when administered within the treatment window.
When to See a Neurologist
If you or a loved one has experienced any stroke-like symptoms — even if they resolved quickly (which may indicate a transient ischemic attack or “mini-stroke”) — it is essential to consult a neurologist for proper evaluation and prevention strategies.
If you need expert neurological care for stroke evaluation or prevention, schedule a consultation with Dr. Chetan Padghan.
